Rafael Nadal withdraws from US Open

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the US Open because of the knee injury that has kept him out of the game since he lost at Wimbledon.

His victory at the 2010 US Open final completed a career Grand Slam. Last year, he was the US Open men’s singles runner-up, falling to Novak Djokovic in a four-set final.

Nadal has not played since losing in the second round of Wimbledon in June due to a knee injury that caused him to miss the Olympics as well.

The Spaniard has since missed both the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters events and he said in a statement: "I am very sad to announce that I am still not ready to play and have to withdraw from this year's US Open in NYC.

“I am sorry since I always found great crowds and great support, but I have to continue with my recuperation and preparation to be ready to play in the right conditions. I want to say hi and thanks to all the fans in particular to the New Yorkers. I'll miss you all this year at the Open."

The 26-year-old won his seventh French Open title earlier this year at Roland Garros , the 11th career Grand Slam singles title of his career. However, his aggressive, physical style of play has caused problems before, especially with knee injuries, which put him on the sidelines for a prolonged spell in 2009.

Nadal was No.2 in the world but dropped place following the resurgence of Roger Federer.

Now that place could threat if Andy Murray, the No.4, continues his recent run which has seen him reach the Wimbledon final and win the Olympic gold medal.
