Roddick sticks around with Fognini win
Andy Roddick set up a mouthwatering fourth round tie with Juan Martin del Potro after defeating Italy’s Fabio Fognini.
Knowing that each match could be his last – after announcing his retirement earlier in the tournament – Roddick fought hard to win 7-5, 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-4 to extended his career just a little longer.
Playing an opponent who can be erratically brilliant, Roddick used the fanatical Flushing Meadows crowd to raise his game and produce a thoroughly entertaining performance.
"I'd be an idiot not to use the crowd right now. It's a huge advantage," Roddick said. "Each match is almost like it's another memory."
“This whole process, I'm not trying to over think it. I'm enjoying it. I'm trying to be as simplistic as possible. I'm trying to enjoy the process. And when I get out there, [I’m] trying to compete also,” Roddick said.
In his match del Potro defeated fellow countryman Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) as he benefitted from an incredible 45 unforced errors.
The win means that two former US Open champions will be squaring off and though del Potro acknowledges it will be a special match against Roddick, he’s just focusing on trying to regain his title.
"I know this is special, this day, for him, but I'm doing my job," said del Potro. "I will try to be focused on my match and doing my things, my shots. The match is going to be very tough. But, anyway, if I play in high level, will be tough for both players. The crowd loves Andy here and they have respect me, so it will be a fantastic show to the players and to the fans also."
Elsewhere, German Philipp Kohlschreiber shocked the American No.9 seed John Isner 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in three hours and 20 minutes, with the match finishing at 2:25 a.m local time. His win sets up an interesting clash with Serbian Janko Tipsarevic.
Defending champion Novak Djokovic continued his easy progress at the US Open with a 6-3 6-2 6-2 third-round win over Julien Benneteau of France.
