Roger Federer continues to impress at Flushing Meadows
Roger Federer wants to win a sixth US Open crown, and on the form he is showing so far, it seems as though no one will be able to deny him that feat.
The 31-year-old moved into the fourth round of the Grand Slam held in New York after defeating Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The victory was his 24 in his last 26, and he is yet to drop a set in his three matches.
“I had no clue my stats were that good coming in,” said Federer, who reclaimed the world No.1 spot after lifting his seventh Wimbledon crown. “I really tried to play offensive against Bjorn Phau in my second match. I did lose more points than I was hoping to. I think that gave me the confidence to move forward today and conditions helped that because it was quicker during the day.
Federer’s form has been superb, as he has reached four finals in his past four events. He reached the final of Halle and the London 2012 Olympics, but triumphed at Wimbledon and in Cincinnati before arriving to New York.
Federer is looking to put the painful memories of last year behind him. He was beaten in the semi-finals by eventual Novak Djokovic, this after he was two sets to love up and held two match points.
“I was thinking about that match today,” Federer admitted to in his interview. “I always believed I would get back to number one in the world and now that I am, it's amazing. It has been a great year.”
Next up for Federer is home favourite Mardy Fish after he beat Gilles Simon in four sets.
Tomáš Berdych was given a very tough time by American Sam Querrey, but the sixth seed came through after dropping the first set. Nicolas Almagro beat Jack Sock in four sets, while Andy Murray’s next opponent will be top Canadian Milos Raonic, who beat American James Blake 6-3, 6-0, 7-6(7-3).
