Stosur ends Robson’s US Open dream
Laura Robson’s dream run at the US Open is over after losing in straight sets to defending champion Sam Stosur.
The British youngster lost 6-4 6-4 to end a memorable run that included the scalps of Kim Clijsters and Li Na.
Despite her defeat the 18-year-old continued to show that she could be a potential star pushing the Australian all the way but ultimately failing to capitalise on the chances she created.
Robson broke Stosur early in the first set but was broken back immediately by Stosur who then was forced to save two break points at 4-4.
That proved crucial as Robson went on to lose the set on a double fault and eventually the match – but not before saving eight match points.
"It's been a good tournament for me. I can take the fact that I'm up there with the top girls in terms of level. I had two really, really great wins. Going into my next tournaments I can take a lot of confidence into them, and try to play as well as I did here,” Robson said after.
"It feels like Sam makes you feel you're playing badly because she hits it with so much spin. Her serve is really special. It's hard to get it back. I've never played anyone with a serve like hers before, so it takes a couple of games to get used to. I had a lot of opportunities I didn't take,” she added.
Stosur will now go on to play world No.1 Victoria Azarenka who crushed Anna Tatishvili, 6-2 6-2. The Belarusian has lost just 10 games so far and has yet to lose to Stosur in six previous meetings.
"I have not done well against her in the past," Stosur said. "I think there's a few things I've learnt over those last few matches. Hopefully I can put all those into play and have a better match. I look forward to that opportunity again - I think quarterfinals of another Slam, you've got to give it everything you've got."
